Kathmandu Lhasa Overland 8 Days 7 Nights Itinerary

We start our tour with an early morning drive through the "Friendship Highway", to Kodari at the Nepali border post 5-6 hours drive. After completing immigration and customs formalities drive up the hill Tibetan border town to Zhangmu (2,300m). After the formalities, we continue our journey through a beautiful gorge to Nyalam crossing the Himalayan range. The Tibetan Guide will meet the Group on arrival at the check post. On the way, you will see a fantastic view of a deep valley with some overflowing waterfalls. We stay overnight at Nyalam after a 4 to 5 Hours drive from the Nepal border.

Day Highlights

After breakfast drive to Xegar crossing two spectacular passes approx 7 hours to reach Lhatse crossing through the Nyalam pass (3,800m) and Lalung La pass (5,082m). Mounting to the through the dry plateau highlands. this day offers fantastic views of the high mountains including offers spectacular views of the world's highest mountain range, including Langtang (7,245), Xixapangma (8,013m), Dorje Lakpa (6,980m), Gauri Shankar (7,134 m), Cho Oyu (8,021m), Lhotse (8,516m), Mount Everest (8,848m/29,021ft) Jugal Himal, Mt. Makalu (8464m) etc. Stay overnight at the Guest House at Lhatse.

Day Highlights

Today we visit the famous Tashilunpo Monastery and the seat of Panchen Lama until his death in 1989 with its huge Thangka walls which are clearly visible from the north side of the road. Morning drive to Sakya (30 km), visit the famous Sakya Monastery. This is the ancestral temple of the Sakyapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It was built in the 6th year (1073) of the Xining reign of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) by Khon Konchog Gyalpo, the founder of the Sakyapa sect of Lamaism. Sakya, meaning "Grey Soil" in Tibetan since the soil surrounding it is gray; it is the central monastery of the Sakyapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. And visit other Monastery Natang Monastery, in Xigaze is one of the survivors. Today, we have the longest driving day via Gyatsola Pass 5,220m by crossing Lhatse from where the road to Mt. Kailash bifurcates. We drive approx 6 hours to reach Shigatse overnight. Stay overnight at the Guest House.

Day Highlights

After having breakfast, take a bit to relax and explore Tibet’s second-largest city, Xigatse, including the world-famous Tashilumpo Monastery. In the afternoon, we will arrive in Gyantse, a small, historical town along the banks of the Nyang Chu River and home to the monastery of Buddha's 1,000 Images. After having lunch we drive to Gyantse where you visit the Khumbum Stupa and Phalkot Monastery. Then we visit the Southwest of Lhasa on the northern bank of the Nyang Chu River. In the 15th century, it served as the capital of a small country. Visit Kumbum Chorten which was built around 1400 AD. It later became the main center for trade with British India. Stay overnight at the Guest House.

Day Highlights

Today we reach Lhasa after a long drive of approx 8 hours through the ancient villages, yaks, mountains sheep, Crossing the Karo La (5,010m) and Kamba La (4794m) pass, and Lake Yamdrok Tso and lakes dot our route today, as we cross the famous Brahma-Putra River (Son of Brahma, the creator. Brahma is a Hindu God). You will cross the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river and see the distant views of the Potala Palace Respectively your final destination awaits-Lhasa for overnight in Lhasa.

These are your explore day in Lhasa, you will be engaged with sightseeing and excursion of the Potala Palace (A great museum with its proportions and priceless treasures), Jokhang Temple (the holiest of Tibetan shrines, which houses two images of the Buddha brought as dowry by Songtsen Gampo's Nepali and Chinese queens) along the bustling street of Barkhor Market.

On this day, you will also visit Norbu Lingka (the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas), Drepung, and Sera Monasteries. Stay overnight at Lhasa.

Today as per your flight schedule you will transfer to Gongkar Airport for the onward flight to Kathmandu. With boundless beauty speed below, this is perhaps the most beautiful flight in the world. The flight is of 1 hour 30 minutes and is one of the most beautiful flights in the world. On your flight (don't forget to get right side seat) you can see the Yalung Tsangpo River, Lake Yamdruk, Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Makalu (8,463m) and Mt. Everest (8,848m/29,021ft).
