Overview

Are you interested in a budget trek in Nepal that attracts fewer trekkers? If so, the Manaslu Budget Trek is an ample destination. We especially designed this trip for students and low-budget travelers who are keen to explore the Himalayas at minimal expense. The name of the Manaslu Circuit Budget Trek originates from Mt. Manaslu (8,156 m), the eighth-highest mountain in the world. The Manaslu Trek has been promoted all over the world since the Japanese team made the epic journey to the top of this mountain in 1956. Today, you can experience this trek as a tea house or a basic homestay.

The Manaslu Circuit Budget Trek goes from low land to high land through amazing natural beauties and incredible landscapes, so this trip is known as the virgin trekking trail of Nepal. The trek is a combination of adventure tests and cultural livability. Century-old Tibetan culture, people's lives, beliefs, rare wildlife and vegetation, monasteries, chortens, mane walls, and mountain scenery make your trip remarkable. Larkya La Pass (5,160 m) is the main key point of the Manaslu Budget trip, and glaciers, lakes, and a beautiful surrounding natural atmosphere make the trip more enjoyable. Manaslu is near the Tibet border, and the culture here is untouched by modernization. The government of Nepal has declared a restricted area for trekking.

You need special permits to hike in this area, which a registered trekking agency can exclusively obtain with at least a professional trekking guide and a minimum of two people in a group. The trip cost is already expensive because it requires four different permits and incurs long-distance transportation expenses. As Gorkha residents, we at Nepal Mother House Treks are trying to reduce the trip cost and make the budget trek.

The Manaslu Circuit Budget Trek journey begins in the capital city of Kathmandu, after organizing all permits and paperwork. There are regular bus services from Kathmandu to Arughat Bazaar. For much more comfort and a pleasant drive, you can also hire private vehicles. If you have a short time, then there is an option to drive to Lapubesi, further than the Arughat bazaar; this makes you two days ahead of the classical trekking itinerary. Trekkers are concerned about the road congestion at the Manaslu Larke Pass Trek and are curious about the trekking trail of the Manaslu Circuit beyond the road. To meet your goal, we try to escape vehicles and road construction at the beginning of the trek and explore Nepalese rural settlements and livelihoods with dissimilar experiences to other trekkers.

The trip continues along the bank of the Budhigandaki River (Yashodhara Nadi) and its narrow canal, visiting various rural villages, including Machhkhola, Tatopani, Jagat, Philim, Deng, Namrung, Lho, Samagaun (the birthplace of theMingyur Rinpoche book "The Joy of Living"), and Samdo, and crossing over the Larkya La Pass via Dharmashala. Finally, the cheap Manaslu Circuit Trek concludes at Dharapani, following a visit to the villages of Bhimtang and Tilje. Take a public bus or private jeep to Besisahar and then to your destination.

We at Nepal Mother House Treks assume the Manaslu Budget Trek will be the best option for those trekkers who are looking to trek on a remote trip in the high Himalayas at a lower cost. To avoid the crowd of trekkers, it would be best to visit in mid-September or late October in the autumn and from March to May during the spring. We are glad to organize the Manaslu Circuit Budget Trek according to your requirements with expert local guides and porters. Sign up with us for your ultimate experience in the heart of the Himalayas in a budget-friendly way.

Day-to-day

Manaslu Circuit Budget Trekking Itinerary

Leaving the busy city of Kathmandu behind, your trip starts early in the morning with a picturesque drive toward the Himalayas. Your first leg of travel is lined with winding roads, quaint hillside towns, river valleys, and terraced fields. About six to seven hours later, you will reach Arughat Bazaar, a vibrant commercial village on the banks of the Budhi Gandaki River.

Sitting on the border of the Manaslu area, Arughat acts as a door to the distant northern scenery.  It's a wonderful place to walk, get a local snack, and appreciate the difference between the lowland heat and the prospect of cooler mountain air ahead.

The road toward Machhakhola (930m) from Arughat continues on a narrower, bumpier dirt track.  This second length of the trail, which winds through wooded hillsides, crosses little bridges, and passes waterfalls pouring into deep gorges, takes about 2½ to 3 hours.  Passing through traditional villages like Arkhet and Lapubesi, you will first really see rural life in Nepal's mid-hill area.

You will arrive at Machhakhola, a riverside settlement where your trekking journey really starts, by late afternoon or early evening.  Set by the Budhi Gandaki, Machhakhola provides basic teahouses, warm dinners, and a tranquil night's sleep surrounded by nature.

A mix of natural beauty, local culture, and the silent anticipation of the high Himalayas waiting for you sets the tone for the wonderful trip ahead.

Day Highlights

Starting from Machha Khola, a small, historic village perched above the Budhi Gandaki River, your day unfolds with a picturesque jeep journey to Jagat. Over a rough mountain road, the drive takes 2 to 3 hours and provides panoramic vistas of lush hills, towering cliffs, and waterfalls falling down rocky slopes.  This brief but bumpy ride saves energy for the farther and more spectacular portions of the walk ahead and helps skip the lower path areas.

Your walking journey starts from Jagat (1,340 m), gradually ascending via terraced farms, forested slopes, and stone steps.  Prayer flags fly in these lovely Gurung- and Tibetan-influenced towns like Salleri, Philim, and Ekle Bhatti, where traditional lives remain unspoiled by the contemporary world.

Often across large suspension bridges over the roaring river, the path traverses the deep gorge of the Budhi Gandaki. The scenery begins to change after passing the Nyak Phedi bridge. The valley narrows, the air cools, and the forest deepens with bamboo, pine, and rhododendrons.

About six to seven hours of hiking will bring you to Deng (1,865 m), a tiny hamlet tucked on the hillside.  You will first start to see a greater Tibetan Buddhist cultural impact in this village. You will spend the night at a local teahouse, surrounded by warm dal bhat, breathtaking views, and the quiet sounds of nature.

Day Highlights

As you trek from Deng to Namrung—a whole day revealing some of the most atmospheric and culturally rich territory on the circuit—today's adventure provides a profound immersion into the raw beauty of the Manaslu Conservation Area.

Leaving Deng (1,865 m) behind, the path ascends steadily through thick forest and traverses a number of exciting suspension bridges over the Budhi Gandaki River. The scenery starts to change as you climb; subtropical vegetation gives way to alpine terrain, and the village architecture starts to show more Tibetan influence with mani walls, chortens, and carefully carved prayer stones lining the path.

As you travel through lovely towns such as Rana, Bihi Phedi, and Ghap, you will enjoy brief rest stops and gain insights into the local way of life. Watch for langurs jumping across the treetops, vibrant birds, and the faraway whir of spinning prayer wheels. Here, too, the mountain vistas start to open; on clear days, you'll see your first glimpses of Manaslu North and Himalchuli (7,893 m).

The path switches between severe upward climbs and flatter areas, sometimes following thin trails cut into rock faces and sometimes wandering through quiet pine woods.  The air feels crisper and fresher the higher you ascend—perfect for a consistent, rhythmic pace.

Trekking for a whole 7 to 8 hours will bring you to Namrung (2,660 m), a lovely stone settlement with antique watchtowers and magnificent mountain views. Namrung is a significant cultural entrance into the upper Nubri Valley, where Tibetan Buddhism rules every facet of life.

The guesthouses in Namrung are warm and inviting, and the village has breathtaking sunset views, so it's a wonderful spot to relax, recharge, and acclimatize for the next days.

Day Highlights

One of the most beautiful and culturally rich parts of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, today's trip is leaving Namrung (2,660m) behind; the path takes you further into the high Himalayas—where stone towns, ancient monasteries, and jaw-dropping mountain views mix perfectly.

Passing Tibetan-influenced towns like Lihi, Sho, and Lho, the path progressively climbs through lovely rhododendron and fir woods. Mani walls, chortens, and well-carved prayer stones adorn every town, offering a wealth of knowledge about the spiritual practices of the Nubri Valley.

Soon, you'll reach Shyala (3,500 m)—a stunning highland settlement encircled by a Himalayan amphitheater. Here, you enjoy wonderful panoramic views of Manaslu (8,163m), Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli,Peak 29, and more. Whether you want to enjoy the scenery or stop for lunch, this area is the ideal location.

From Shyala, you can go straight to Sama Gaon (Ro) (3,525m), the largest and most important settlement in the upper Manaslu area, or, if you're feeling active and acclimatized, choose a gratifying side excursion to Pung Gyen Gumba (3,870m).

Optional: Walk to Pung Gyen Gumba (3,870m)

This spiritual and spectacular diversion leads you over open meadows to the secret monastery of Pung Gyen, tucked on a ridge behind the enormous Manaslu Glacier. Often visited by monks and residents for meditation, it is a haven of serenity and prayer. The path provides amazing views of Manaslu's icefall, glacier walls, and towering summits; in spring you might spot blue sheep grazing on the alpine slopes. Though it's worth every step for those acclimatizing or looking for deeper cultural and visual experiences, this side trip takes around 2 to 3 hours round-way.

Reaching Sama Gaon (Ro)

Whether you go directly to Sama or stop at Pung Gyen Gumba, you will finally reach Sama Gaon, a lovely Tibetan-style village surrounded by mountains and yak pastures. Rich in culture, history, and Himalayan beauty, the settlement is on a natural plateau. In the coming days, it is an ideal spot to relax, acclimatize, and discover the local terrain.

Evenings in Sama Gaon are calm—perfect for drinking Tibetan hot tea, conversing with locals, and getting ready for side treks or the next high-altitude crossings.

Day Highlights

Trek from Sama Gaun to Samdo (3,850m) next—2 to 3 Hours

In the core of the Himalayas, today is a significant acclimatization day.  Your body adjusts to the greater altitude before going toward the Larkya La Pass by staying a second night in Sama Gaun.  Acclimatizing is about vigorous climbing to higher elevations followed by low sleeping; it does not imply resting all day.

Advance Base Camp/Manaslu Base Camp & Birendra Lake Morning Hike

Following breakfast, you will embark on a half-day acclimatization trek to Birendra Lake (3,650m), a beautiful glacial lake supplied by the Manaslu Glacier. Sacred to local Buddhists, the turquoise-blue lake contrasts strikingly with the snow-covered rocks above.

The path sharply ascends to Manaslu Base Camp (4,400m) or, for those who are strong and well-acclimatized, to Advance Base Camp (4,800m). These high-altitude treks provide stunning views of Manaslu (8,163m) and the spectacular icefalls and seracs of its surrounding glaciers.  You will probably pass herds of blue sheep, see flying Himalayan eagles, and perhaps even encounter mountaineering teams as they establish their high camps during climbing season.

One of the most remarkable events of the walk, this one-way trip lasts 3 to 4 hours. It's time to carry on your trip after returning to Sama Gaon for lunch and some relaxation.

2 to 3 Hours Afternoon Trek from Sama Gaun to Samdo (3,850m)

The path ascends gradually over open yak pastures and alpine scrub, leaving behind the fields and prayer flags of Sama Gaon.  As you approach the trans-Himalayan highlands of Samdo, this area becomes noticeably lonelier and windier.

You will trek under the watchful gaze of great mountains and over several wooden bridges before arriving at Samdo (3,850m), a tiny and evocative settlement sitting just below a spectacular ridge. Just a few kilometers from the Tibetan border, Samdo's residents have strong cultural and commercial ties with Tibet. A fantastic spot to see genuine Himalayan wilderness, the settlement itself is bleak, windy, and absolutely fascinating.

With chilly air setting in early and stars blazing brightly above, evenings in Samdo are calm and introspective. Your last significant halt before facing the Larkya La Pass is a wonderful area to relax, hydrate, and prepare for the high mountain difficulty ahead.

Day Highlights

Though brief, today's walk is quite significant since it takes you to the base of the Larkya La Pass—the highest and most spectacular point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.  Surrounded by towering mountains and large, glacial vistas, the path from Samdo (3,850m) to Dharamsala (also known as Larkya Phedi) takes you deeper into the Himalayan environment.

The path starts with a slow uphill ascent, stream, and little wooden bridge crossings, following a hearty breakfast in Samdo.  Steadily rising in height, you will cross desolate moraine fields, yak pastures, and craggy slopes.  Stark and lovely, the terrain provides wide views of Samdo Peak, Larkya Glacier, and the north face of Manaslu (8,163 m).

The terrain gets more rough and wind-swept as you climb.  There are no settlements along this stretch—only pure nature and the mountain echo.  You might see Himalayan blue sheep or lammergeiers flying far overhead as well as some seasonal yak herder huts.

Trekking for about four to five hours will get you to Dharamsala (Larkya Phedi) at 4,460 meters—a simple yet essential staging site for the early morning climb across Larkya La Pass.  Often busy during peak hiking season, the guesthouse here is basic, and at this height, it typically lacks electricity or hot baths. Charge all devices before arrival and get ready for a chilly, early night.

Rest, hydrate, and take in the wonderful high-alpine vistas throughout the day. Your guides will brief you about tomorrow's difficult pass crossing; tonight is crucial for eating properly and staying warm. The air is chilly and thin; even before sundown, temperatures can drop below freezing.

This is your last night before climbing one of Nepal's most stunning and gratifying high passes—Larkya La (5,106m).

Day Highlights

Today marks the end of your trekking expedition back to Nepal's lively city, Kathmandu, following the awe-inspiring journey across the inaccessible Himalayas. Comfortable driving from Besisahar (760m) along the winding Prithvi Highway back to the Kathmandu Valley starts the day.

Roughly five to six hours of road travel provide a leisurely and beautiful transition from mountains to metropolis.  Traveling beside the Marsyangdi and Trishuli Rivers will take you lovely past villages, terraced farms, and wooded hills, allowing you to catch views of rural life that contrast sharply with the high-altitude scenery you have just left behind.

You might pause for lunch or tea in one of the highway towns, like Mugling or Malekhu along the route, renowned for its riverside seafood and local delights. From river gorges and wooded hills to the bustle of market cities, the changing landscape displays Nepal's immense diversity.

Traffic might slow in the outskirts as you approach Kathmandu, allowing you time to consider your trip—from the terraced hills of Arughat, across raging rivers and lonely Buddhist communities, up to the frozen splendor of Larkya La Pass, and now back to civilization.

Once you arrive in Kathmandu (1,350m), we will assign your otel. A comfy bed, a hot shower, and maybe a well-deserved celebration dinner in Thamel await. You have just finished one of Nepal's most genuine, off-the-beaten-path, and fulfilling hikes—the Manaslu Circuit—a trip of both difficulty and amazement.
