Lhasa, literally meaning “Holy Land," is the heart and soul of Tibet and has a history of more than 1,300 years. Offering unique mystery and allure, the Buddhist Kingdom of Tibet has long captured the hearts and minds of the Western world. The Kathmandu to Tibet Tour covers a vast tract of this ancient land, crossing spectacular passes, through unforgettable landscapes, and heading right into the spiritual heart of the country, Lhasa. In over ten days, the Kathmandu to Lhasa Tour manages to take in a little bit of all the attractions Tibet has to offer.
As an important center, “Lhasa” had administrative power in the 7th century AD, when Songtsen Gampo, a local ruler in the Yarlung Valley, continued the task of unifying Tibet. On the spot where the Potala is now located, Songtsen Gampo moved his capital to Lhasa and constructed a palace. The Kathmandu to Lhasa Tour via Everest Base Camp drives over the 'Friendship Highway', along the way stopping at silently enchanting Buddhist monasteries like Sakya, Shalu, Natang, and remote villages untouched by modern civilization.
A generous one night will be spent at Ronbuk, time to take in some unforgettable views of the highest mountain on the planet, Mt. Everest (8,849 m). Further on the road passes through quiet Nyalam, the historical Shigatse and Gyantse, famed for the Gyantse Kumbum. And that's all before the road even comes into Lhasa itself, the spiritual heart of this country. For centuries the home of the Dalai Lama and the target of devout pilgrimages, you could spend happy weeks lost in Lhasa's historical and spiritual treasures. This is convenient as the tour finishes after a day tour of the capital; that’s exactly what you’re free to do. Become one of the lucky few to have experienced first-hand the spiritual energy and sheer beauty of this amazing country.
Our Kathmandu to Lhasa Tour via Everest Base Camp trip consists of two parts. The first leg of the trip begins with excursions in Lhasa, visiting the Potala Palace, Jokhang, Sera, and Drepung Monasteries. Then we drive to Tingri via Gyantse, Shigatse, and Sakya, visiting all the popular monasteries along the way. The second part of the trip will be the Mt. Everest Base Camp Trek from Tingri on the Friendship Highway; it is relatively easy to access. Mt. Everest is "Quomolangma,” which means “The Third Goddess” in Tibetan. The walk is not particularly strenuous—only one low pass must be crossed during the Kathmandu to Lhasa Tour via Everest Base Camp. Near the Everest Base Camp, Rongbuk Monastery has been reconstructed. It is one of the largest monastic complexes in the region. The view from here of the Everest North Face perhaps is the most dramatic of all.
