Overview

The 5-day Langtang Short Trek begins at Syabru Bensi after a 5- to 6-hour scenic bus ride from Kathmandu. The trail goes through the forest of pine, juniper, rhododendron, bamboo, and other rare vegetation, with swift mountain streams, rugged rock, and snow-capped peaks at the beginning. The Langtang Valley Short Trek trail follows the Langtang River most of the time when you are at Ghoretabela. The valley becomes wider with the majestic view of the Langtang Himal range toward a settlement of the Langtang and Kyanging Gumba. If you visit Lang Tang Trekking during the spring, the jungle can be considered colorful, with rhododendrons, orchids, and magnolias blooming at the surface, and the high mountains seem to welcome you with a charming white face.

Usually, you will walk through Langtang National Park. Inside the park, you may see rare wildlife, including red pandas, Himalayan black bears, wild boars, and langur monkeys. Tamang ethnic groups are the principal inhabitants in this area; they have been following culture, tradition, and cultivation from their old generation to now. Some people are following animal husbandry in a nomadic way. If you have already been to Tibet, the Langtang Short Trek will remind you of it.  The culture, livelihood, and religious beliefs are similar to Tibetan.

In ancient times, Langtang Valley, known as "Namgodagam," meant hidden land, the heavenly gate of half-moon form. This hidden land lies in the Langtang Valley of the Rasuwa district. The Teton Golden Chen reveals this place, and later Guru Thetan Glachen opens it for meditation. When this place, Namgodagam, was opened, it carried the myth-associated name Langtang. "Lang" means ox (male yak), and "Thang" is Khet in Nepali (farm). The ox with two hornsturns flat on its back once the owner follows it. Thus, the name Langtang came from this incident. The name of the town where the ox died, Lansiya, "Langshisa," further demonstrates this. And even today, the people in this place perform the annual ritual of the dead bull. Tibetans came to the southern part of the hidden land and started living there in the settlement; the head is Kyanjin Gumba, where pilgrims visit for meditation. There are several caves around this place as well. The most important cave is Padmasambhava, on the edge of the eastern base camp of Langtang Lirung. Pilgrims can reach this holy place in a two-hour walk from Kyanjin Monastery (Gumba). Locals who are from Tibet live here.

The summer settlement of Kyanjin Gumba, with its small old monastery, is located beyond Langtang village. This location goes by the name of Kyanjin Gumba, a monastery. Although Mingyur Dorje Dhomas constructed the Kyanjin Gumba approximately 330 years ago, the Buddha and Guru Rinpoche statue dates from the eighth century. Visitors can also enjoy the airport and yak cheese factory, in addition to the captivating mountain scenery. The fluted northwest face of Kangchenpo dominates the small settlement of 20 to 25 teahouses and yak pastures. The ideal place to stay is Kyanjin Gumba, which can be explored over three to four nights. Stunning views can be found at Kyangjin Ri (4772 m) and Cherko Ri/Tserko Ri (4984 m). Views include the magnificent Pemthang Ri, Langshisha Ri, Dorje Lakpa, Kangchenpo, Tilman's fluted peak, and Langtang Lirung. Panoramic scenery is visible at 360 degrees from here, which is the best anywhere in the Himalayas.

The From Kathmandu, you can complete the short Langtang Trek in a minimum of 5 to 7 days. From Kathmandu, you can complete a number of Langtang Treks in a minimum of 5 to 7 days within a reasonable time frame. Reach the highest points at Cherko Ri (4984 meters), Kyangjin Ri (4772 meters), and Glacier in the shortest amount of time. If you can extend your holiday, then it is best to go hiking at Langshisa Kharka (4285) and Langtang Lirung base camp for the glacier moraine and icefall and visit five holy lakes below the settlement. You can have a slice of fresh yak cheese at the Kyanging Gumba factory. After collecting a number of unforgettable memories on your Langtang Short Trek journey, you will descend from Kyanjin Gumba, retrace your steps along the river back to Syabru Bensi, and drive back to Kathmandu.

While hiking to the beautiful Langtang Valley, you will be a tremendous support for the locals who lost their homes and their families during the mega earthquake on April 25, 2015. We have rebuilt the teahouses and prepared the trekking trail for walking. It is safe to trek in Langtang Valley now. Day-to-day

Langtang Valley Short Trek Itinerary

Our guide and porter come to your hotel at 6:00 am. Then we head north out of Kathmandu to Syabru Besi, about a 5/6 hour scenic drive by bus or Land Cruiser (depending on group size). The scenery of foothills and ridgeline vistas to Syabrubesi goes through the Trishuli Bazaar, Betrawati, and Dhunche; you feel as if you are heading towards deep land. While passing along the road at the bank of the Trishuli River, you catch a glimpse of Ganesh Himal, terraces, and green hills. Behind Trisuli Bazaar, the road is tricky because of the grubby road. There are two different road accesses to the Syapru Besi:

[I] Kathmandu to Syapru Besi via Tokha Road: Kathmandu to Trishuli 54 km

[II] Kathmandu to Syapru Besi via Prithvi Highway: Kathmandu to Trishuli 72 km, Galchhi to Trishuli 22km 30 minutes drive

There are two roads to Syapru Besi:

[I] Betrawati to  Syapru Besi via old Road: 54 km

[II] Betrawati to Syapru Besi via new Road: 22 km—It is not ready due to the monsoon.

As a first day of trekking, we find ourselves very excited to walk. Aster takes a short break; we start to walk. The first part of the trail crosses through Bhote Koshi and follows the Langtang Khola and gradually climbs to Bamboo (1960 m). Stay overnight at the hotel.

Day Highlights

Enjoy yourself in the rhododendron and bamboo forests. The variety of wildlife includes yellow-throated martens, wild boars, langur monkeys, red pandas, and Himalayan black bears that all inhabit this forest. Afterwards, your trek ascends gently to Rimche (2400 m) through bamboo, which lies at the bank of Langtang Khola with only a few houses. Probably, we will have lunch at this place if you like. And the walk continues to the Lama Hotel (2,470 m) ascending trail in the jungle, following the Langtang River.

Now, the trail climbs towards a steep forest slope to the Langtang River. The trail follows Gumanechok, Ghoda Tabela; literally, it means the Horse Stable. After this, the trail is gradual with beautiful views into the valley of grazing yaks. After some time, it descends into a valley; the trail crosses a stream and climbs past several water-driven prayer wheels to the large settlement of Langtang. This town is one of the oldest villages along this trekking route, and the view from here is more spectacular as we get closer to the mountain. The rest of the day we walk around the village and stay overnight at a guesthouse.

Day Highlights

The trail leads us through a tiny village with stone-built houses, climbing to a Chorten, and passing a huge mani wall along a gentle path. We have a chance to taste cheese and curd made from yak milk, a specialty of this place. This is a short walk but enough for acclimatization. The surroundings are also interesting because of the famous cheese factory. This beautiful valley is in the lap of the Langtang Lirung and others around us. This section is a good place to explore the local culture, which is remarkably similar to Tibetan culture.

After having lunch, we start to climb Kyangjin Ri (4772 m); it takes about one and a half hours to two hours to get to the top. From there, you have a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Langtang II/Ghonge Liru (6,596 m), Langtang Lirung/Ghone (7,227 m), Changu (6,251 m), Kinshung (6,781 m), Langtang Yansa (6,048 m), Yurba (6,264 m), Tserko Peak (5,749 m), Yala Peak (5,500 m), Langshisa Ri (6,427 m), Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m), Ganchenpo (6,387 m), Dshabu Ri (5,202 m), Urkin Kanggri (5,863 m), and Naya Kang (5,844 m) and the foot of the huge Langtang Lirung Glacier. Descend to the guesthouse and trek to Ghodatabela (2920 m) all the way downhill; you will see fantastic views of towering mountains that you may have missed on the way up.

Day Highlights

Today also we retrace the trail all the way to Sybrubesi, about 6 to 7 hours. For a change we will follow the so-called ‘high’ route back to Syarubesi. This trail splits off the route we took upwards shortly after leaving the Lama Hotel. The route goes to the small village of Syarpagaon, continues onto Bhanjyanggaon, and then to Khangjung before descending back to Syabrubesi. This was the primary route to Langtang before the new trail (which we followed on our way up) was built.

Day Highlights

We should be ready at 6:00 in the morning in the hotel lobby to have your breakfast or ask questions of your trekking guide. We will drive back to Kathmandu through the road passing terraces, streams, rivers, local settlements, high hills along the Trishuli riverside. It takes about  5 to 6 hours (conditional) to reach your hotel in Kathmandu by bus/private car.
