Overview

Before giving you profound insight into our Poon Hill trek, we would like you to know we also organize a long Ghorepani Poon Hill trek that covers more beautiful villages around the area. This itinerary is our short 4-day Poon Hill trek, specially designed for those who have no time to go on long treks to enjoy the beauty of the Himalayas and its rejuvenating air. No doubt, Poon Hill trekking is one of the easiest treks in the Annapurna region and offers an equally rewarding experience.

Because of the accessibility of the trail and the short trekking option, the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek has gained a lot of popularity among travelers. It is probably the best way to get away from the crowds of bustling cities and unwind. The trail goes through quaint villages and lush forests. Most of the trail follows the rhododendron-bloomed path, which makes the venture gorgeous. Moreover, a few steep uphill climbs along the way make the journey adventurous.

During the trek, you will explore Ghorepani village, situated at 2,855 meters. This village is surrounded by lush rhododendron forests and snowcapped peaks. You can see the daily life of the locals and their culture while staying overnight here. People from the Pun Magar community mostly reside here. Further, you will ascend to Poon Hill, from where you can witness stunning sunrises and Himalayan mountains like Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m), Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Mt. Nilgiri (7,061 m), Mt. Hiunchuli (6,441 m), Mt. Tukuche (6,920 m), Mt. Fishtail (6,993 m), Mt. Manaslu (8,156 m), Lamjung Himal (6,972 m), and many others.

Go through our Poon Hill trek map to learn more about the route. You can also custom-create the Poon Hill trek itinerary as per your requirements. For more information on the Poon Hill trek package or pricing, please feel free to contact us at your convenience.

Poon Hill Trek Route and Trail Information

The Poon Hill Ghorepani Trek begins at Ulleri or Banthanti after a scenic short drive from the beautiful city of Pokhara. Then, you will drive for an hour to reach Nayapul, which was the starting point of the classical trek. But nowadays the road crosses further the Birethanti and goes along the bank of Bhurungdi Khola to the Banthanti. On this Poonhill Trek Route, you do not need to walk through villages like Sudan and Hille and escape the hardest part of the trek, Tikhedhunga to Ulleri, which is steep and ascending. The trail passes by lush forests of rhododendrons and takes you to a beautiful Ghorepani village

The next day, you will wake up early to catch the sunrise from Poon Hill Viewpoint, located above Ghorepani village. The trail to the viewpoint is steep and through the forest. Upon reaching Poon Hill, you get to see a heaven-like view, the glorious sun rising with the backdrop of snow-clustered western Himalayan mountains. After that, drop down to Ghorepani village to have breakfast and continue trekking, following a downhill path that leads back to Tikhedhunga, from where you will drive back to Pokhara and Kathmandu. The Poon Hill Trek can be done in 2 days from Pokhara due to easy road access to Ulleri and Banthanti. For long holidays, travelers can extend this trek to 13 days combined with the Annapurna Base Camp Trek for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

How difficult is the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek?

Poon Hill Trek 4 Days is not a difficult trek, and anyone can do this trek. The trail does have several ascents and descents through forested and rugged paths. Likewise, there are some steep sections along the way. However, if you are physically fit and healthy, there will be no problem. The maximum altitude you reach during the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is 3,210 meters

There is no drastic change in the altitude, and as our Poon Hill Trek itinerary has a constant increase in elevation, the chances of altitude sickness are also low. Overall, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is doable for people of any age; no previous trekking experience is needed, and it is also a good family trek.

Day-to-day

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Family Trek Itinerary

Our Guide and staff will come to your hotel in the morning. The first-day trek starts at Nayapul after two to three hours of driving by private vehicle from Pokhara Nayapul, Birethanti, and Tikhedhunga, following the north bank of the Bhurungdi Khola through villages and climbing steadily up the side of the valley to Hille (1,495m) and Tikhedhunga (1570m). Birethanti (1,015m) is a large village that has many shops and teahouses, where most of the treks begin from here. The main inhabitants of this village are Gurung, Magar, and Thakali. The walk starts from Ulleri. Then the trail continues to ascend more gently, through dense forests of oak and rhododendrons towards Banthanti (2250m). Occasionally, we can see Lonmgur (long tail black mouth Monkey) jumping in the trees. Then we trek towards Nangethanti (2,460m), after an hour walk we arrive at Ghorepani (2840m). Stay overnight at a lodge.

Day Highlights

We will hike about 45 minutes up to Poon Hill (3210m) early in the morning. This viewpoint provides an unobstructed and beautiful view of the sunrise over the high Himalayas with panoramic view giants Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna (8,091m), Machhapuchere, Nilgiri, Hiuchuli, South Annapurna etc. Additionally we can see a network of other peaks, slowly beginning to appear like magic before our eyes. We come back to Ghorepani for a hot breakfast and start walking to Tadapani. Here the trail climbs alongside ridges with pine and rhododendron forests to the Deurali and then descends through beautiful waterfalls, streams, and dense forest to Banthati. The streams have some clear pools alongside the trail which finally climbs up to the final destination Tadapani meaning ‘hot water.’ This is the water supply for a village far away.

Day Highlights

Today we will descend steeply through the dense forests with breathtaking panorama views of the Ghandrung village, inhabited by Gurung people. If you wake up early in the morning you can catch some excellent sunrises above the mountains. We will stay overnight here so you’ll have the afternoon to visit the Annapurna conservation office, museum, and picturesque ancient Gurung village, the second largest Gurung settlement in Nepal.

Day Highlights

Today is our last day of trekking. We complete our trek in Kimche (1640m) after an hour's walk. It makes for a short and easy walk through the terraced hill settlement. Then drive 1 and half hours by a private vehicle followed by a ride back to Pokhara, a peaceful lakeside city harboring a unique setting of tropical climate and vegetation with the dramatic backdrop of the Himalayas. Stay overnight at Pokhara Hotel. This is your ending day of the trip, you are free to your own destination.

Essential Information

Would it be possible to do the Poon Hill Trek in the winter?

Poon Hill trekking in winter is possible because it is a low-altitude trek. The trail is open from December through February. However, the region does see snowfall; therefore, you have to prepare properly and pack warm clothes. The only thing that can be annoying during trekking in winter is luggage, as it gets heavy due to warm clothes.

The temperature drops below 15°C. The best thing about trekking Poon Hill in December or January is that accommodation is easy to get. Not many trekkers trek at this time of the year because of the extreme cold. Therefore, the trail is less crowded and tranquil as well. The view is fantastic if there is no fog.

Plan Your Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek at the Best Time.

The best time to do the Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek is in spring (March, April, and May) and autumn (September, October, and November). Everything during this time of the year is perfect for trekking in the Himalayas, whether we talk about stable weather, a moderate climate, or breathtaking views. Likewise, in spring (March, April, May), the trail welcomes numerous species of rhododendrons and other wildflowers, enchanting the journey with their heavenly presence. Whereas, in autumn, the tempting festivals celebrated by the locals add holiness to the journey.

What kind of accommodation is available on the Poon Hill Trek?

You stay overnight in a lodge or teahouse during the Poon Hill Hike. The accommodation will be comfortable. You can choose to stay overnight in a shared or single room. Single rooms are more expensive than shared rooms and might not be available in the peak season. Depending upon the place, the washroom can be common or private. The rooms are mostly small, with beds and a few other pieces of furniture. The meals are served as per the menu of the lodge or seahouse. You can expect Nepali, Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, and Continental dishes on the menu.

You should know permits and paperwork before starting the Poon Hill trek.

Poon Hill Trek requires the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit and a TIMS card. You can get this permit either from the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), Exhibition Road, Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu, or the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), Dam Side, Pokhara. If you are trekking with a travel company, then they will arrange these permits for you, and you only have to give them one photo and a copy of your passport. Whereas if you are trekking alone, then you have to be physically present to obtain the permit with photos and other documents.

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit:

  • NRP 3,000 per person

TIMS Trekkers Permit:

  • NRP 1,000 per person for organized treks through an agency (the permit will be in blue), hiring a guide, and porters.
